The Week Ahead: Time to Buy

Sunday, December 23rd, 2007

Source: Seeking Alpha ()

The holiday week ahead offers up a shortened period that could prove
volatile on light volume. A good portion of the market will be on
vacation, sipping eggnog and singing carols, or more likely playing
poker and arguing with distant relatives!

I have been
vocal on my call to rally as we near the end of the year. I continue
to expect a late Santa Claus rally to spread into a full-fledged
January effect. A pending recession and bullish stock run can in fact
go hand in hand my friends, because seasonal capital flows should find
deeply valued beaten down shares now appealing.

401K reshuffling
could also play a role in where capital flows, as employees the nation
over move capital in a reactionary manner out of losing sectors into
winners. For this reason, I expect another early run for emerging
market shares boosted by fund flows. In Q4, kitchen-sink write-offs
sank shares in lending, investment banking, home building and other
industries, and while many of these businesses are not due for imminent
recovery, the stocks look cheap in some instances and the market is
forward looking.

THE WEEK AHEAD

Monday

Christmas
Eve is a trading day my dear friends, however desolate downtown New
York will surely be. Whoever does show up for work on Wall Street,
or otherwise manages to peruse a portfolio, will likely take off early
anyway. Thus, barring any major breaking news surprise, I would expect
a light day typical of the pre-holiday type.

Zero economic data
is due for release and the earnings calendar is empty as well. However,
the New York Stock Exchange will rebalance several indexes, and
Barron’s reports that the NYSE U.S. 100 Index will add Transocean
(RIG), Deere (DE), Union Pacific (UNP), CME Group
(CME), Apache (APA) and Southern Copper (PCU). The
index will remove Automatic Data Processing (ADP), Cardinal
Health (CAH), One Financial (COF), Fredie Mac
(FRE), SunTrust Banks (STI) and Washington Mutual (WM). The trading day …

'BRAINIACS' JUICING UP A STORM

By SUSANNAH CAHALAN, Post Wire Services

December 23, 2007 — It's not just big-time athletes popping pills to pump up. An increasing number of New Yorkers, from Wall Street execs to pro poker players, are taking enhancement drugs to boost the most important muscle of all - the brain - and gain an edge at work. The brain boosters of choice are prescription stimulants, mainly the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder drugs Adderall and Ritalin and the narcolepsy pill Provigil. One newcomer to the list is the beta-blocking heart drug Inderal, which can curb anxiety. "This is a complete parallel to baseball," said Alden Cass, president of Catalyst Strategies Group, referring to Major League Baseball's steroid scandal. Cass, whose firm coaches high-profile professionals, said many Wall Street executives and even doctors and - "under the spotlight every day and expected to play above and beyond everyone else" - abuse brain-boosting stimulants.

In Elk City, Oklahoma

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

Source: CardPlayer.com ()

Long, long day. We've arrived and checked into a motel in the small town of Elk City in the west part of Oklahoma. We headed out around noon MST today and have just arrived 15 hours later at 4 a.m. CST. When we first started driving today, I realized I was going too fast because the trailer was fishtailing. We were relegated to averaging a senior citizen-like 58 mph over the course of the 760 miles we traveled today. We stopped just a couple of times for gas and once for dinner at a hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant in Santa Rosa, New Mexico. The only real trouble we ran into was heavy traffic and heavy snowfall just east of Albuquerque, NM. I anticipated making it to Oklahoma City tonight, but OKC was a lot farther than I thought. We'll probably sleep til 11 a.m. and then get back on the road. This leg will be the worst as it's a very boring, marathon trip down I-40 through Oklahoma and Arkansas. We should arrive in Huntsville, Alabama tomorrow night at midnight or so. I'll probably spend the night there and then get up early to help Stephanie unload her few items from my car. I'll then drive to Birmingham to home in time to play some of the Sunday tournaments. We've gone 1010 miles total. Time for sleep.

People: TO to Jessica: Just kidding

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Source: Denver Post ()

Terrell Owens gives Paris Ebanks, 20, a hug during a shopping trip to JCPenney earlier this month as JCPenney teamed up with the Dallas Cowboy and his Catch a Dream Foundation to make this family’s holiday dreams come true. Dallas Cowboys star Terrell Owens says he was only joking when he blamed quarterback Tony Romo’s lousy performance last Sunday on the presence of new girlfriend Jessica Simpson.
“I tried to get to call her so I can explain to her that she doesn’t really know me and I can be funny,” Owens told The Dallas Morning News on Thursday. “It’s not a big deal. I will try to rectify the situation between her and I.”
The wide receiver with the big mouth made a tongue-in-cheek comment targeting the ditzy celeb after Dallas’ 10-6 loss to Philadelphia. Romo threw three interceptions as the Cowboys failed to score a touchdown.
Simpson attended the game wearing a Romo jersey with a pink No. 9. The last time Romo played so poorly, his then-girlfriend, singer Carrie Underwood, was in the stands.
Cowboys fans and sports talk radio hosts suggested Romo was distracted by his girlfriend’s presence. Owens, in a widely misinterpreted crack, echoed their complaints. “Right now, Jessica Simpson is not a fan favorite in this locker room,” Owens initially said. “I think with everything that happened, and obviously the way Tony played …I think a lot of people feel like she’s kind of taken his focus away.”
Hours later, while attending the Dallas Mavericks victory over Phoenix, Owens clarified things.
“I understand how everybody was looking at Jessica Simpson as a distraction, and that’s definitely not how I saw it,” Owens said. Romo “had a bad game. I don’t think she had anything to do with it.”

Asia Pacific Poker Tour Ends With PE Teacher Winning One Million …

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Source: Casino Gambling Web ()

Poker tours are growing in number, and that means the number of millionaires that come out of these tours is also growing. Yesterday, the newest member of this poker millionaire club emerged.

Grant Levy, a physical education teacher from Sydney, defeated 561 other entrants to win the first Asia pacific Poker Tour held at Star City.

The buy in for the tournament was $6,000. Levy took the money and it ends up invested it wisely. He defeated four former World champions on his way to the title.

Levy claims he has no real strategy behind his play. He mainly just used his instincts to carry him to the tournament win. The game lasted for three days and sometimes ran all the way till dawn.

“I love teaching. It’s a passion. i love poker, it’s a great hobby. I get so excited when I sit down to play. People can lose passion for their jobs and I don’t want poker to become work,” was Levy’s reply when asked if he would quit his job.

He has only played poker for two years before winning the inaugural Asia Pacific tournament.
